FCI Leavenworth Release Meaning
FCI Leavenworth belongs to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Its incarcerated population does not appear in the Leavenworth County sheriff roster, and Kansas KASPER is not the authoritative federal record. The BOP Inmate Locator is the first release channel. It covers federal inmates generally from 1982 forward and can return former inmates as well as people still in federal custody.
A past release date with no facility means, under BOP's own record explanation, that release occurred on that date and the person is no longer in BOP custody. A location shown as “RELEASED” carries the same limited meaning. It does not prove that federal supervised release ended. It also does not rule out later custody under Kansas, a county, ICE, or the military. State the claim narrowly: BOP records release from BOP custody on the displayed date.
| Locator result | Accurate conclusion |
|---|---|
| FCI Leavenworth location | Current BOP record places the person at this institution |
| Different BOP facility | Federal custody continued through a transfer |
| Past release date, no facility | No longer in BOP custody as of that date |
| Future release date | Projected date, not a completed release |
| No result | Not proof of release; check identifiers and coverage limits |
Confirm FCI Leavenworth Releases
Open the BOP Inmate Locator. Search by register number when known. The locator also accepts DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers. A name search can use exact first, middle, and last name with age, race, and sex to narrow the match. Compare each displayed field before reaching a conclusion.
- Choose number search when a federal register or other listed identifier is available.
- For a name search, enter the exact legal name and use the supported identity filters.
- Match the register number, name, age, race, and sex shown in the result.
- Read “location” and “release date” together. A transfer remains federal custody.
- If the result shows RELEASED or a past date without a facility, record the exact date and access date.
- Use the federal sentencing court or probation office for a separate supervised-release question.
The federal search is also distinct from the Leavenworth County released-inmate search, which routes county-jail bookings through the sheriff, VINE, and local records.
FCI Federal Locator Fields
BOP results list the name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and either a location or released status. These fields provide a compact federal custody record. The register number is particularly helpful because Leavenworth has several unrelated correctional systems and similar names can be confused.
| Field | Use |
|---|---|
| Register number | Links the result to one federal inmate record |
| Location | Shows a BOP institution or RELEASED status |
| Release date | Past date can confirm release; future date remains projected |
| Age, race, sex | Identity checks for a name-based match |
The official federal locator is shown in the captured source.

The tool is a federal prison locator. It does not search the county jail, KDOC state prisons, ICE detention, or Army correctional facilities.
FCI Leavenworth Record Limits
BOP says its locator data is updated daily. A new event can still take time to appear, so a high-stakes present-status question may require direct BOP contact. Records before 1982 may need the National Archives. Additional federal prison records can be requested through the federal Freedom of Information Act process. The locator should not be stretched into a complete biography of custody.
A federal court docket can explain the sentence, a later order, or the legal start of supervised release. It may not equal the physical processing time at the institution. Likewise, a person can finish BOP custody and then face another sovereign's hold. If ICE, a state, or a county assumes custody, continue with that custodian. Do not treat the BOP release field as proof that the person entered the community.
- BOP custody
- Confinement controlled by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
- Federal supervised release
- A court-ordered community supervision term separate from prison custody.
- Transfer
- Movement between custodians or facilities while custody continues.
- Projected date
- A future date that may change and does not confirm a completed exit.
FCI Leavenworth Official Contact
The official FCI Leavenworth page is the source for current facility identity, address, telephone, visiting notices, and operational updates. Contact information can change, so use that page rather than relying on an old directory. The public facility source also helps distinguish the BOP institution from the county jail and the two Army prisons at Fort Leavenworth.

The institution page confirms the responsible agency. Release lookup still belongs in the BOP locator, while extra records follow BOP's records process.

Leavenworth Federal Custody Boundaries
Leavenworth County's own 2024 mapping report listed a 1,607 capacity snapshot for the federal institution. It is a dated planning figure, not a current population guarantee. More important, the report places FCI Leavenworth beside county, state, and military institutions with separate operators.
The BOP locator is not the correct source for the United States Disciplinary Barracks or Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility. Those are military institutions under Army Corrections Command. It is also not ICE's Online Detainee Locator. “Federal” is too broad to select a database without first identifying the agency.
After an FCI Release
A BOP release result answers the prison-custody question. The federal sentencing court and federal probation office answer whether supervised release is active, modified, revoked, or complete. Those are distinct records. A locator user should preserve the displayed federal register number and release date, then check the court record only when the legal supervision question matters.
Another custody system can begin after the federal prison term. ICE detention uses ODLS and ERO. A Kansas state case uses KASPER. A local booking uses the appropriate sheriff or jail. Military confinement uses Army channels. Following that chain prevents the common error of calling someone “free” merely because one agency no longer holds them.
Note: A no-result should be described as no BOP match with the inputs used, not as proof of release from FCI Leavenworth.
FCI Historical Release Requests
The public locator generally reaches federal inmate records from 1982 forward. An older FCI Leavenworth confinement may need a National Archives search instead. For a covered record that needs more than the locator fields, BOP's federal records process is the proper next channel. A focused request should identify the person by register number, give an approximate confinement period, and name the existing release or transfer record sought.
Historical research should preserve agency boundaries. An old Fort Leavenworth military record is not an FCI record merely because both facilities share the Leavenworth name. Likewise, a person held for the U.S. Marshals before BOP designation may have a federal court trail without a matching FCI stay. Link each claim to the custodian that created it.
FCI and Marshals Custody
The U.S. Marshals Service manages many federal prisoners from court-ordered custody through acquittal or delivery after conviction. Those people can occupy local or private beds before BOP designation, yet USMS has no broad public locator comparable to BOP's. Its policy also limits public release of prisoner photographs, arrival or departure times, and personal histories.
Use the federal court docket to establish the legal outcome. If the person was later designated to BOP, search the locator with the federal register number. If the record never entered BOP coverage, contact the responsible federal custodian through its lawful records route. A local federal arrest is not proof of an FCI Leavenworth stay.
After a federal sentence, a detainer can change the next destination. ICE, Kansas, another state, or a county may take custody. The BOP record still reports the end of BOP custody, but cannot answer what the new custodian did. Follow the handoff and keep both episodes separate.
